Kew Gardens HQ

JG Towing has been running out of the same Kew Gardens yard since 2018. We hire drivers when call volume warrants it — which is most of the time, given how many people in Queens and Nassau call us per week. If you've been driving tow trucks in the city and you want to work for an operation that pays straight, treats drivers like adults, and doesn't run sketchy non-consent calls, this might be the right move.

What the job actually is

Real description, not the recruiter version. You drive a tow truck — flatbed, wheel-lift, or heavy-duty wrecker depending on the position — out of our 118-09 83rd Avenue yard in Kew Gardens. Calls come from the dispatcher. You pick up the ticket on your tablet, drive to the address, verify the customer's identity and authorization, photograph the vehicle, rig it correctly for the vehicle type, transport it to the destination the customer specified, photograph it at drop, get the signature, collect payment if applicable, log the job, head back or to the next call.

Standard call types: stranded sedan in a residential block, AWD on a flatbed to a body shop, work van breakdown on a commercial avenue, post-accident collision pickup with insurance paperwork, jump-start or fuel-delivery roadside. Volume varies by time of day and weather. Snow days are relentless. 2 AM Tuesdays are quiet. Friday nights and rainy mornings spike.

What it's not: highway recovery, parkway tows, NYPD rotation non-consent work, predatory private-property pickups. We don't do any of that and we never will. If you've worked the non-consent side and want out, this is the place.

Position types

Flatbed driver

Most common position. You operate the flatbed for AWD, EV, luxury, low-clearance, and post-accident vehicles. Standard commercial driver's license (NY Class B/CDL preferred but not mandatory for sub-26,000 lb flatbeds — talk to us). Soft-strap rigging discipline matters. We expect drivers who know how to secure a Tesla without scratching the paint or chaining the frame.

Wheel-lift driver

High call volume — most local Queens tows are wheel-lift on standard front-wheel-drive sedans. Faster rigging, faster throughput. Standard NY commercial driver's license is fine for the vehicle weight class.

Heavy-duty wrecker operator

CDL Class A or B with proper endorsements required. Box trucks, Sprinter vans, RVs, buses, and commercial rigs over 10,000 lbs. Lower call volume than flatbed but higher per-job revenue. Position requires actual heavy-wrecker experience — not the place to learn the rigging.

Roadside technician

Non-tow position. You roll a service truck and handle jump starts, flat tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Lower barrier to entry, no CDL required. We train on the lockout tools and the proper diagnostic flow for "is this a jump or a tow."

Pay and structure

We pay W-2, not 1099. That means you're an actual employee with workers' comp coverage, employer-side payroll taxes paid, and a real pay stub at the end of each week. We don't run the gig-economy contractor model where the driver eats every cost and the company keeps the upside.

Pay structure varies by position — base hourly plus performance bonuses on call volume and customer feedback. Specific numbers we discuss on the call when you apply (we don't post comp publicly because it's not the kind of information that's useful in a job ad). What we'll tell you up front: we pay above the median for what tow drivers in this market actually take home, and we pay weekly, every Friday.

Other things included:

  • Trucks are ours — you don't bring your own vehicle
  • Fuel is on the company card
  • Tools, jump packs, lockout kits, all supplied
  • Workers' comp coverage
  • Real schedule — we don't double-book or no-show drivers
  • Paid orientation and equipment training before solo runs

What we look for

Three things matter:

  1. Clean license, clean record. We do standard background checks. DUI in the last 7 years, recent moving violations, or commercial driving violations are hard stops.
  2. Knows the territory. If you've driven in Queens and Nassau for a few years and you know cross-streets by feel, you'll outperform someone with a longer resume from elsewhere. Territory knowledge compounds on every call.
  3. Doesn't cut corners. The consent-only workflow is non-negotiable. Pre-load photos every job. Written authorization every job. Drop photos every job. If that sounds like too much paperwork, we're not the right fit. If it sounds like the basic standard the industry should already be holding, we agree.

How to apply

Easiest way: text (347) 539-9726 with "applying for tow driver" and include:

  1. Your name and the position you want
  2. Your driver's license class and any CDL endorsements
  3. Years driving tow trucks in NYC or Long Island
  4. Whether you can start within 2 weeks

We'll text back within 24 hours if it's a fit. We don't run automated applicant-tracking systems — a real person reads the messages and replies. The driver who sends a clean message with all four pieces of info gets contacted faster. That's also a pretty good signal of whether you'll handle dispatch tickets carefully on actual jobs.
